Among all the types of swimming pool lights, the standard incandescent and quartz halogen lights are usually the most cost effective and provide strong illumination.

These traditional lighting systems are made waterproof for swimming pools. To eliminate the risk of shock that results from combining electrical connections with water, these lights come completely sealed inside a protective waterproof fixture that fits in a niche in the pool wall.

Since the bulbs are sealed as well as the fixtures, changing them when they burn out requires a little extra effort. You literally pull the light out of the pool wall on its specially designed extension cord, and bring it to the surface, where you replace the burnt-out bulb. You then reinsert the unit into the waterproof niche.

Due to the engineering involved in constructing an underwater lighting system and the difficulty of wiring a pool, these pool lights are better be installed when the pool is built—they are nearly impossible to install afterward.

Traditional swimming pool lights are available in wattages ranging from 50W to 500W. Putting several pool lights of smaller wattages around the pool would have different effect from putting one big pool light. Most brands of simple white pool lights provides two voltage options of 12V and 120V. The low voltage system reduces the risk of the system delivering any electric shock. Check with your local codes and building officials for the lighting requirements which will be accepted. These lights typically have available plastic color lens which snap on over the glass lens to produce a nice underwater effect.

LEDs don’t typically burn out like traditional lighting, but rather gradually decrease in light output. They are more resistant to thermal and vibrational shocks and turn on instantly, making them ideal for applications subject to frequent on-off cycling.

Another reason why LED pool lights are more attractive to pool owners than the traditional pool lights is that LED pool lights are very eco-friendly and their fixtures are some of the only "green" products that are able to be used at pools. They do not contain anything to harm the environment.

The benefit of solar pool lights is huge especially during the financially depress days. They are inexpensive and don’t add your electricity bill. They are also maintenance free. But there are things you need check for when you shop for solar pool lights. Solar pool lights can be very colorful but may not be as bright as you think. So be sure to get multiple units if you want to light a larger pool. During cloudy days, you can’t expect the light will last as long as it will when they receive a full day of sun. Some solar pool lights may be too small that they can go into your skimmer. You also need to check the quality of the concealments so the solar pool lights may not leak and sink. When the batteries got corroded, they become unusable.
